What is USL&H Coverage?
USL&H stands for United States Harbor Workers & Compensation Coverage. This is a Federal law which imposes certain legal responsibilities on the boat owner and provides certain recoveries to a person who may be considered an employee and who is injured while on the insured boat. For example, if a boat owner hired someone to come on board and work on the engines, the USL&H law could define that person as an employee because the boat owner is paying that person for his services and exercising some direction and control over his activities. . This law compliments state Worker’s Compensation Laws that provide coverage for injuries which occurred ashore. USL & H coverage does not apply to someone who is defined as a seaman or a crewman. Not all marine insurance policies contain USL&H coverage.
