The first part of the stomach can only take in a small portion of food, which then slowly moves into the second part of the stomach. The Mayo Clinic also notes that studies indicate that this surgery is not as effective as other surgeries, so it is not as common. University of Pennsylvania Health Services indicates that there is no difference in nutrition or vitamin absorption.
