What is/was the most over rated video game?
Well you would have to go by genre, rather than pick one universally overrated game…as genres are so different today, that the subject can no longer really be applied to encompass the entire medium. So I go for Final Fantasy VII in the RPG genre. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s an awesome game, very much so. But, since its debut, it has fashioned and molded the RPG genre as we have come to know it, and now just about every role playing game takes its blueprints from the clichés and archetypes first established by FFVII. Even Atlus, the black sheep of the RPG genre, now has talking wolves. I find this a bit sad, because the genre is now flagged with expectations, more often than not relegating new and fresh ideas to old and countless reused concepts. If it isn’t FFVII, it’s later Square titles, lacking innovation and substance, making way instead for fan service and always more of the same, now continuing to shape the genre in its straight arrow fashion much like FFVII did for ten years.
I think it’s most of the games that are under the mark “RPG”. Yeah, a lot of them don’t give the real feelings during the play if you compare with a real RPG such as Skyrim for example. However, a lot of people underestimate such games as Gacha life or WolfQuest. I think these are the games that can give a real feeling of RPG during the play since a lot of different people with different tastes could play on them together! I play on Gacha life with my family and I wonder if I can play together with someone from a different device than mine.
