What is window film?

Window film generally combines some form of plastic with an adhesive to create a covering for windows. It is usually made out of polyester enhanced with tint and chemicals that deflect the ultraviolet rays of the sun There are many types of window film. While it is often tinted, it can also be clear, patterned, reflective or non-reflective, with a scratch-resistant coating. Today's window film has come a long way from the original application introduced in the 1970s. Correctly applied, it bonds permanently to glass and seldom splits, bubbles, cracks or peels. Window film is extremely thin layers of metal, making up what you see as tint, enclosed between two pieces of clear polyester plastic. Older films used chemical dyes to provide the "tint". These have largely given way to the sputterized (metalized) film. Dyed films were notorious for fading and even changing colors. Dyed films typically had 5-7 year warranties; today's sputtered films typically have ten-year or lifetime warranties. Modern films adhere to glass with adhesives that no longer form gas pockets (bubbles) after a few years.  more

There are many types and constructions of solar control and safety window films. In their simplest forms, window films are composed of a polyester substrate to which a scratch resistant coating is applied on one side; a mounting adhesive layer and a protective release liner is applied to the other side.
