What is with the name Not Cancer Foundation?
There are three reasons why we chose the name Not Cancer Foundation. The first stems from our frustration with how people regularly refer to cancer-related charity efforts. Commonly people will remark that they are raising money “for cancer.” Though well-intentioned these individuals are literally advocating the opposite of our goal. Because we aim to eliminate cancer our mission is to help create an environment without cancer, a state we call “not cancer.” The second reason is that when we finally accomplish our goal, every doctor will be able to confidently tell patients that whatever ailment they have is “not cancer.” The last reason for the odd name comes from a impromptu chant delivered by a late-night entertainment act at the 2003 Northwestern University Relay For Life event. Struggling to motivate participants at 2:00am, the band bellowed, “Down with cancer…Up with not cancer!” You see, it works on multiple levels. 2. Who are you guys?
