What is your favorite book?
For myself personally, it all depends on what my mood is-to I want a sad book, a book that makes me think, a action/thriller, a romance to escape into or I’m I trying to learn a new skill or learn about someone famous or find out why a war was started. I tend to avoid political books or nonfiction that does not read like a story. I’d had to read too many books like that for school.
If you’re trying to write something for publication it’s a good idea to know what works are popular in that chosen genre and what subgenres there are, if any. If there are not very many maybe you’d like to create a new one. It is also a good idea to see what is popular in a certain age group and write to that or put a new spin on what is being written for a certain age group.
Ones faith is also a factor in what one choose to read as Ms. Jones points out in her response. I too enjoy my NIV 1984 bible and some Christian fiction. I say some Christian fiction because a lot of the older fiction is rather unrealistic and it seems contrived to me when I compare it to the general fiction offered. Some newer authors are doing a much better job these days such as Klassen, Julie. Of course, I really like classic works of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings Series and the Hobbit. The Silmarillion is an interesting work but I have to be in the mood for it. C.S. Lewis’ Narina Chronicles are wonderful too.
I like Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See (historical fiction and a book club book) Wicked Autumn Malliet, G.M. (A mystery Series set in England-I like the series thus far and not just one particular book).
All the best on your research.
