What Kind Of Bird Is A Budgerigar?
The budgerigar, commonly known as a budgie is a type of parakeet. It is a very common cagebird – over 3 million are kept in the UK alone. The budgie originated in Australia, where it is still one of the country’s most numerous species of wild bird. The birds we keep as pets come in all sorts of colours – blue, yellow, grey, pied, white and other colour variations, but wild budgies have only one plumage pattern. This is a yellow head, neck, back and throat with black barring and green underparts. There are a few exceptions of naturally occurring yellow mutants but the other colours have been produced by in breeding. Budgies in the wild live in large flocks in grasslands, semi deserts or on cultivated land. They really are not very fussy and can live almost anywhere. They feed in the early morning and later afternoon on grass seeds that they find on the ground.
