I've never climbed it, but have spent time in that neck of the woods at the Bristlecone Pine Forest. Since reports state that there is a road all the way to the top, my guess would be you should be able to accomplish the hike in running shoes or lightweight hiking shoes. Water seems to be the biggest concern. I consume about 1qt every 90 minutes or so when hiking in higher elevations. Traveling at 2mph uphill (a really easy pace) you should top out the summit in about 4 hours (if you don't take a lot of breaks.) Then you have to get back down. You'll travel faster on the downhill and can most likely knock it off in 2.5 hours. Total Time: 6.5-7.0 hours....I wouldn't start the hike with anything less than a full gallon of water per person. In summer...maybe more.
