What kind of motion causes lunar and a solar eclipse?
When the moon is directly in front of the earth, the moon’s shadow falls on the earth as a tiny spot, only around 100 miles across. When that happens, people inside the spot or close to it see all of the sun covered by the moon for a few minutes, or more likely, part of the sun covered by the moon for a few hours. This event is a ‘solar eclipse’; it’s visible only to people close enough to the small spot at the end of the moon’s shadow.
