I do not, and have never smoked marijuana or anything else. However, for centuries, the hemp plant, which is a variety of the marijuana plant family, has been used to make everything from rope, to cloth and clothes, to paper, to sails. Our Declaration of Independence and Constitution are written on hemp-based paper. Navies of the sailing-era bought tons of the plant for uses as (already stated) rope and sails. However, when the era of the sailing ship went away, so did the need for the hemp plant, and it either died out from being grown in improper conditions, or was cleared away to make room for real crops. But during WWII, the rather ironic demand for hemp returned, as it was a cheap, easy and quick substitute for flaxen rope, more expensive nylon and other synthetics. Farmers were asked, encouraged, and almost flat-out ordered to devote part of their land to growing hemp (I think it was a full 10% of their land).
