There are four aspects to your donkey’s health: grooming, hoof care, deworming and vaccinations. Donkeys can be groomed like their equine counterparts. Brush in the direction of the hair, and be gentle around the face and ears. Shaggy winter coats can be brushed with a shedding blade, or your donkey can be clipped. Bathing is not necessary unless you show them, as donkeys prefer a dust bath. Donkeys’ hooves are very elastic and do not wear down as much as those of other equines. If they are left to grow out, they can grow quite long and turn up, which can lead to permanent damage. Ideally, hooves should be trimmed every eight weeks depending on how rapidly your donkey’s hooves grow. For deworming, you can use most equine wormers on the market, with dosages amended for the smaller weight of a miniature donkey. Certain wormers containing moxidectin are not recommended for donkeys (such as Equvalan Gold, Quest Plus, etc). When in doubt, check with your veterinarian. Worming should be done
