Generally any stable, sound substrate is acceptable, including; lath/scratch/brown coat over sheathing, cement board, masonry, CMU block, natural stone, tile, ICF, EIFS, lightweight cement, mortar bed, cement fiber board over wood, exterior gyp sheathing with cementitious base coat and embedded mesh.
