There is a wide variety of plants to choose from. I suggest you try java fern. It is a low-medium light and very undemanding plant. Do not plant this in the substrate though. If you have driftwood and big enough rocks, you can tie it there and it will root itself onto that surface. Another broad leaf, hardy and medium light plant is Nymphea or tiger lotus. Very attractive red leaves and elegant flowers if you let it grow surface lily pads. These pads will be a nice surface for a bubble nest that bettas and other anabantids love to build. Bettas have very small bodies when look at it without fins. They like to hide and swim through stem plants. Bacopa, anacharis and cabomba are all great stem plants. For long term care and beauty, you should buy a proper hood and fluorescent lighting, at least 3 watts per gallon. Balance lighting with a good fertilizer and Co2 unit.
