Figures such as 4% of the land surface or 10% of total freshwater ecosystems are commonly used to represent wetlands. I suspect these are conservative estimates because the extent of wetlands globally might well be in excess of these figures. One of the national newspapers in Canada reported last week (i.e. mid-November) that more than half of the world’s lakes are threatened by overuse, so said an expert panel at the World Water Council. When I read this, I wondered how many of these lakes are actually wetlands or include wetlands. Do we know? Perhaps or perhaps not, but I think it is important for us to continue to inform ourselves and others that wetlands are discreet ecosystems with unique characteristics that commonly can be found in association with lakes or other open water bodies. There are likely far more wetlands if we only knew how to recognize them or knew where they were.
