What land did the US gain as a result of the Mexican-American War?
No, no, no, no, no! All wrong! Texas had already won its independence from Mexico and was an independent country from 1836 to 1846 (Republic of Texas) before joining the Union as the State of Texas; the only state to enter the Union in this way. After the Mexican-American War, the US gained California which was the main objective of the war, along with Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and part of Wyoming. The US already occupied the Oregon Territory (present-day Oregon & Washington), but they had to share it with the British. The US offered to buy the territory for thirty million dollars, but Mexico refused to sell. There was a border dispute in Texas, and Mexico made the mistake of firing the first shots. After the war Mexico was forced to sell the territory that the US originally wanted, and at the original price of thirty million dollars.
