What languages are spoken in India?
Hindi is the national language and is spoken by about 30% of the population, mainly in north India. There are 14 official languages in India and 844 different dialects. Anshal’s family speaks Gujarati, which is widely spoken in Mumbai and the state of Gujarat. Raj’s family speaks a language called Sindhi, which is not widely spoken in India.
Hindi (northern India) and English (used in politics and commerce) are the officially used languages. More than 1,500 languages and dialects are spoken in India. The constitution recognizes 15 regional languages. They are: Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
