General contractors need to adhere to different guidelines depending on the state.  Some states are much more relaxed than others.  In Oregon, Washington and California, a course with a minimum number of study hours is requuired and a state test must be passed.  All general contractors must possess a bond and liability insurance within a certian amount.  These amounts change depending on what kind of work the contractor is doing.  Some states also have other licenses such as a lead paint removal license or an employee safety license.

Ultimately it depends on your location so always check with your state before hiring a general contractor.

General contractors must have the State of California General Class B license. Another license is the Home Improvement Contractor (BHIC), which was recently introduced as a requirement of all contractors performing remodeling and other home improvement projects by the California State License Board (CSLB). An additional test must be taken for this license.  more
