What Makes a Covered Bridge or Grist Mill Photogenic?

0

What qualifies a mill or covered bridge as photogenic and what does not is often a matter of personal tastes. But for the purpose of this listing, photogenic is defined as the subject presenting as close to a vintage appearance as possible while having good visual nostalgic appeal. For example, since mills powered by a large, exterior water wheel are the most photogenic, turbine mills and mills with interior water wheels will generally appear no differently than any other vintage building. The Glade Creek (Babcock) Mill, in Babcock State Park near Clifftop, West Virginia, is probably the most photographed mill in the U.S., its image appearing on untold numbers of calendars, greeting cards, and in photo galleries. A 1976 recreation of an earlier mill on the other side of Glade Creek, it was built using parts from three other old mills. High grain film, contrasty printing and sepia toneing were used to enhance the nostalgic appeal of this photo – see Nostalgic Photography Techniques. Mil
