What makes a good booking agent?
Attention to detail and viewing the landscape from the perspectives of both a performer and a promoter. I’ve been booking a large jazz festival, Jazz’Salive, in San Antonio for the last 20 years, so I know what buyers are up against with regard to money and hospitality, etc. On the other hand, I know from direct experience what musicians need when they get to a gig and how to insist on those things. The key is negotiating a win-win, and I’m pretty good at that. How do you and your husband share the agency responsibilities? Generally, he handles tours east of the Mississippi, and I handle the West. We both work Texas – whoever answers the phone. Do you book internationally? I have helped several of my artists get booked on some European festivals, but when it comes to club dates, we like to get someone who lives locally to help with that.
