what makes a great singer?
A great singer is able to connect well with their audience. I’ve seen many people whose voices were amazing, but their voices never left the stage! To be great, your message, no matter how insignificant it may seem, must leave your heart, reach the ear of your listener and be good enough to travel to their heart where it resonates. If you’re good, your listeners will understand you, connect emotionally and they may even think you’re speaking directly to them through your rendition. Great singers are able to interpret their song so that it communicates the emotion, the morale, the depth of the composer. Great singers are passionate! They are just as committed to excellence in performance as they are to excellence in preparation. A great singer values the effort of those who choose to listen to them because they count it a privilege to serve their world with their gift.
A Great singer should not only have a strong voice, an appealing tone the ability to stay on key and notable range but they must have the ability to tell a story with the words they’re singing, by putting any emotions relative to the lyrics whether it be a melancholic interpretation for that of let’s say a ballad or attitude and ferocity to an uptempo song. A great singer should also know his/her own voice i.e how it works, its strengths and weaknesses, any cool vocal tricks that may contribute to uniqueness, making them easily distinguishable. They should also know what songs are the most fitting for their voice or vocal stylings, songs that bring out the best in their vocal capabilities. The ability to be diverse, to sing different genres and make anything sound good is also a desirable trait. Some singers even become creative with genres unconventional to their tone/pitch or vocal stylings and inadvertently create their own sub-genre. Above all else is the expression of self. To be able to put a little bit of themself in everything they sing.
