What makes an unborn baby die?

Stillbirth isn’t that common but it does happen. It has nothing to do with your age though. Sometimes their cord wraps around there neck and they can no longer breath. 🙁 Sometimes they have a bowl movement in utero, meconium, and they end up inhaling the amniotic fluids and the meconium. Its a very tragic loss but it does happen. I know a couple people who have lost their baby before its first breath. Its not something one should stress over though because the added stress isn’t good for a pregnancy.

Usually it’s placenta issues – abruptions mostly. Preeclampsia can raise your blood pressure to the point that the placenta will not give adequate circulation and the baby will not receive enough oxygen / remove enough carbon dioxide. The cord can wrap around the neck, preventing blood flow to the brain. There could be a genetic disorder that makes development and growth incompatible with life and baby dies shortly before birth. Blood compatibility issues can cause destruction of fetal red blood cells which are needed to carry oxygen. Those are probably the most common reasons. As for the person above who said meconium, since the baby isn’t depending on breathing in utero, the meconium wouldn’t necessarily present a problem in the baby’s lungs until birth. Having mec inhaled into the lungs prior to birth would not likely be enough to cause death in utero.

It seldom happens that babies die intra-uterine.There can be many reasons for a baby to die before birth.Sometimes it can be because the cord is wrapped around the baby, and it cuts of his blood supply. An simple infection like flu can kill a baby if the mom doesn’t take care of herself. Then there is serious conditions like gestational diabetes and hypertension. The best way to make sure your baby is healthy is to get antenatal care and to go to the Doctor anytime you feel ill or the baby moves less. But be assured intra-uterine death happens seldom.
