Bone marrow stem cells are painful and very expensive to extract compared to cord blood stem cells. Cord blood stem cells are younger, more flexible and more adaptable to new body environment. It is also less susceptible to contamination compared to bone marrow stem cells. Cord blood transplants can still be done if there is less than a perfect match whereas in bone marrow transplants, a 100% match is absolutely needed.
