What makes men selfish?
Often traits are broken down to nature vs. nurture. Nature is defined as the environment around the person. For instance, American culture promotes selfish behavior. Athletes and businessmen are commended for individual performance; advertisements are directed at “you”, etc. Nurture is defined as the care given to the person while they were being raised. If their parents/guardians don’t promote sharing and selflessness, this could be a hard habit to break. Also, if a parent spoils one child or only has one child, this can lead to selfish behaviors as well. On the positive end though, most people can change their habits with persistence. One way to think about things less selfishly is to ask how you would feel if you were someone else’s situation and they did what you want to do (like putting the shoe on the other foot). If you’re looking for a biblical reference, “Do unto others as you’d have them do unto you”.
