What makes Mercon V different from ATF + 3 and Dexron III / Mercon automatic transmission fluids?

A4. The major difference between fluid types is specified additive packages. All three fluids are manufactured as similar base stocks, then specific additive packages are added to these base stocks in order to meet OEM performance requirements. Mercon V is a highly stable fluid that provides durability and extended fluid life characteristics. Compared to ATF+3 that is a highly friction modified fluid that was designed to provide the imperceptible shift in automatic transmissions. Dexron III / Mercon functions as a high detergency lubricant. more
