What measures does Statistics Canada take to ensure that personal student information is kept confidential?
The Statistics Act provides the legal basis for maintaining the confidentiality of all information Statistics Canada collects through its surveys, or obtains from administrative records. By law, Statistics Canada is prohibited from disclosing any information that could identify individuals without their knowledge and consent. When publishing statistics from PSIS, only statistical aggregates are released to the public. All employees must take an oath of secrecy and are subject to prosecution and fines and/or imprisonment should they contravene the confidentiality provisions of the Statistics Act. No other government institution has the right to view information provided in confidence to Statistics Canada.
