I am a makeup artist who has 2 children. my youngest is turned 3 this week. When I was pregnant there were 4-6 nail techs not fare from my makeup station. I asked my doctor if I was in any kind of danger from nail polish or chemicals. My doctor told my nail polish was fine and I should not worry about other nail product chemicals. However, he does suggest a mask for nail techs. to use while performing acrylic nail services. There have been no cases that chemicals in acrylic have ever harmed a nail tech my Dr. said better to be safe then sorry since they are inches from the fumes. Also, many people use to think that nail polish fume was harmful because some contain formaldehyde to prolong its wear. I asked my bio. Professor while pregnant. with my first cild 9 years ago about this rumor. He said some do contain the chemical but there is so little in it and it is not in pure form so it's safe.

For pregnant women who want to play it safe, it's best to avoid sitting in a nail salon, where you could be exposed to solvent fumes. The three chemicals pregnant women should avoid in nail polishes are formaldehyde, toluene and DBP. Some formaldehyde-free brands include Nicole by OPI, L'oreal and Sally Hansen. Higher end brands like Butter and newer formulas of Nars are also free of those chemicals. Be sure to avoid hardeners, which will often add chemicals and formaldehyde.
