What new weapons were introduced in World War 1?
Hi, I’m not an expert on the subject, but I can say a few things. Firstly, the use of barbed wire and trenches, whilst relatively new, did not arrive with WW1. A few conflicts in the Balkan areas had already put these defensive strategies to use, and though the scale was not nearly the same WW1 can’t be hailed as the originator of these techniques. It *was* however, the originator of the tank. Cavalry was finally phased out during the first world war (running at a machinegun post with a horse rarely works out well) and quick assaults could be made by tank. They weren’t all that effective, though the technology was in its infancy. The conflict also saw the early use of aircraft in warfare – more for reconnaissance than for actual attacks per se. The British RAF was first formed in this period, it should be noted. Take a look also at poison gas. Used by Germany against Italian troops, this was one of the first instances of chemical warfare.
