What over-the-counter medications are safe to take for seasonal allergies and headaches while breastfeeding?
• A: Zyrtec, Claritin, and Benadryl are over-the-counter antihistamines. Most studies have indicated that antihistamines do cross into the breast milk, and therefore use while breastfeeding is not recommended. Ibuprofen also does cross into the breast milk and because of limited studies done, use in breastfeeding is not recommended. Tylenol does seem to be safe to use in breastfeeding according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. For more information on these drugs, visit http://www.everydayhealth.com/drugs/.
