What Part Does Opinion Play In Expository Writing?
There are two places where you might find an opinion in a piece of expository writing. First, the thesis statement for the piece is an opinion or perspective on a topic. It may not look to you like an opinion because it may not sound opinionated. Even if it is very low-key, the thesis is a statement of how a writer sees a topic. Second, opinions may be use to support a thesis statement. If I were writing about the political parties in the United States, for example, I might quote from spokespersons for the Republican and Democratic parties. Their statements would be legitimate information even though they are not facts that could be verified by weighing or measuring.
