What part will the DfES play in the channel?
The DfES has funded Teachers’ TV, but we are editorially independent. We will listen to the DfES in the same way we will listen to our many stakeholders. The key to the way we operate is that we are directly responsible to our board of governors, who are separate from Government and the DfES. They are the ones that will call us to account if we fail to meet teachers’ needs. We can’t be a Government mouthpiece — if we were, we’d lose our Ofcom licence to transmit, and teachers wouldn’t watch us. Our independence is really important to us, but at the same time we have to reflect the national curriculum, because, after all, it is what our audience has to deliver. We also have to show ways that will help schools to perform better or, for example, to pass their Ofsted inspection, because this is what our audience is interested in.
