A routine history and physical is advisable. In addition the following are recommended: • Specific questions relating to contraindications, smoking, and concomitant use of other medications as well as a contraceptive history • Measurement of blood pressure • Weight should be recorded to assist in subsequent counselling about weight changes attributed to the pill • Enquiry to rule out risk factors for a) coercive sex, b) unwanted pregnancy and c) sexually transmitted diseases (STD) should be followed by appropriate interventions (contraceptive counselling, STD testing, treatment, and prevention advice, and referral to a domestic violence counselor as appropriate).
