What problems are associated with Group A Streptococcus?
An untreated Group A Strep (GAS) infection can result in rheumatic fever, rheumatic heart disease, blood stream infections, toxic shock syndrome, scarlet fever and necrotizing fasciitis (sometimes called flesh eating disease), as some of the more serious complications. However, GAS can also lead to skin infections such as impetigo and cellulitis (inflammatory disease of the skin).
