What protection against unsafe working conditions exist for pregnant workers?
If you are pregnant, your employer must carry out a risk assessment and take measures to ensure that you are not exposed to unsafe or hazardous working conditions. Your employer is also obliged to provide all female workers of child bearing age with comprehensive and relevant information about the risks identified by the assessment. Employers must also provide the workforce with details of preventative and protective measures which will be taken to comply with the law and protect pregnant women and women of child bearing age. If your employer cannot take such measures immediately, they must offer reasonable alternative work, on terms no less favourable, or suspend the worker on medical grounds on full pay for the duration of the suspension. Your employer is also obliged to undertake a risk assessment to protect you if you are back at work after having recently given birth (within the last 6 months) or you are breastfeeding.
