What risks are associated with tubal reversal?
Inherent to any surgical procedure are risks such as post-operative infections, injury to nearby structures such as bowel and blood vessels, as well as allergies to general anesthesia agents. All of these are very rare complications. Unique to tubal reversal is an increased risk of ectopic of tubal pregnancies that could occur following the procedure. The chance of this is about 5%. For this reason, it’s very important to have a blood pregnancy hormone level followed closely after a missed menstrual cycle, as well as have an early sonogram performed to confirm a uterine pregnancy. Early detection of tubal pregnancy can be managed with medication, and delays in diagnosis will require surgery.
