Women did not play any roles in Shakespeare's plays. Men, dressed as women, played the women's parts. A woman was considered loose if she was an actress or performer, and in the rough and tumble atmosphere of the Globe Theatre, where Shakespeare put on his plays, it may not have been safe for a woman to appear on stage.
