What safety information do children/adolescents need?
Informed children are safer children. Teach your child/adolescent safety information and skills appropriate to his/her age and level of development. Provide young children and those with disabilities with clear information about who is allowed to bathe, dress and undress them. Ideally, there will be only a few adults in a child’s life who attend to their health and hygiene needs. Be specific with children of all ages concerning who they can accept rides from and where they may and may not go. Provide opportunities for them to learn and practise assertive behaviour. Give a clear message that it’s okay to say “No” to an adult who wants them to do something they don’t want to do or whose behaviour makes them uncomfortable. Let them know what kinds of discipline from a caregiver are inappropriate.
