What Safety Lighting regulations pertain to plowing and spreading equipment that is used on state highways?

We have heard from some equipment owners that have been stopped for displaying red flashing lights on their equipment. As you all know, MassHighway modified our safety lighting requirements in the 2006-2008 Agreement because as stated in 540 CMR 22.06 the displaying of red flashing requires a permit from a Fire Chief. MassHighway felt that compiling with this regulation would be burdensome on equipment owners and therefore changed our lighting requirement to include six inch yellow flashing lights. Owners are still allowed to utilize red flashing lights, however, if they have not obtained the proper approval they could be subject to penalties and or fines. We have also heard that some vendors are having difficulty in obtaining six inch round amber lights. Therefore we will accept six inch oval and six inch rectangular amber flashing lights instead.
