What Sampling Unit Should Be Used in Estimating Jack Pine Budworm (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Egg Mass Densities?

0

Abstract: Various sampling units for jack pine budworm, Choristoneura pinus pinus Freeman, egg mass density were examined for jack pine branches collected during 1983 and 1984 in the lower peninsula of Michigan. Results indicated that grid foliage surface area on a whole branch was the optimum sampling unit. If budget restrictions prevent use of this sampling unit, an alternative approach is recommended: double sampling with regression, where the dependent variable is egg mass density based on whole branch grid foliage surface area and the independent variable is egg mass density based on either whole branch formula foliage surface area or 91-cm branch grid foliage surface area.
