Be sure to see our special slideshow of the Trophy winners for the 2009 Rose Parade. The Rose Parade features three types of entries: floral floats entered by a participating corporation or community organization; equestrian units; and marching bands. The only cars that appear in the Rose Parade are those that carry the Grand Marshal, the Mayor of Pasadena, and the Tournament of Roses President. Many of the Rose Parade’s participating organizations have a long history with the Tournament of Roses and have made repeated appearances in the Parade. January 1, 2010, you’re watching the Rose bowl Parade as you lounge on your couch after a late night of ringing in the new year. You do a double take as you see a marching band, from Columbus Ohio march by on the screen, and you hear the announcer state that it is a marching band that is entirely totally blind. Think the obstacles you are dealing with when it comes to your New Year’s Resolutions are insurmountable? All it takes is a story about kids like these to make you think twice about what you are facing. The smallest band to be included in the Rose Bowl Parade this New Year’s Day is also possibly the only marching band of its kind in the World. The 35 member marching band from Ohio State School for the Blind has been preparing for this day for nearly 14 months, and all of the band members are legally blind. The students may be blind, but they are not cut any slack when they march. The band practices several hours a week. The directors say that while the talented students learn their music quickly, teaching them to march as a band was a little more difficult. Carol Agler, OSSB music director explains that they lined the students up, putting their hands on each other and having them complete a left face or a right face. Sources:
