The gates opened at 11 a.m. and the 142nd season was officially here. But long before that race fans enjoyed a leisurely trackside breakfast or raced through the gates at 7 a.m. to lay claim to the perfect picnic table. Bobby LoPresti of Saratoga Springs had a time-honored strategy for reserving five tables. “It’s all about the foot speed. Getting in here, getting around these slow people with the big coolers, and running deep into the tables,” he said. Once inside, fans noticed some additions, namely the new restaurants in the paddock area — Blue Smoke and the Shake Shack, backed by well known restaurateur Danny Meyer.
