Cameras: A video surveillance system is only as good as the cameras. Good quality cameras are able to record high-resolution color video while easily adjusting to varying light conditions. Inferior cameras will provide low-quality video that is essentially unusable. Digital Video Recorder (DVR): A digital video recorder is the “brains” of the system in that it takes the video from the cameras and digitally records them to a hard drive. DVR’s can range from simple and basic recorders to very sophisticated recorders with lots of bells and whistles. One thing to be aware of: the size of the hard drive determines how many days of recording will be stored on the DVR.
