What significance does the Dome of the Rock or the Temple Mount have for Islam, Judaism and Christianity?
All three religions believe this is the origin of humanity, where God created man. For Jews, this place is the holiest site on Earth. It is where God communicates directly with man. In Biblical reference, it is where Abraham brought Isaac to sacrifice in obedience to God’s command, where Jacob wrestled with the angel, where David placed the Ark on his return to Jerusalem. Jesus was dedicated here, preached at the age of 12, was tempted by the devil, and taught during his last days. Muslims believe Muhammad made his night ride on a winged horse with the angel Gabriel and was give the Koran from this rock. It is the third holiest site in Islam. Why is the Temple so important to Jews? Fully 1/3 of Judaism’s 613 commandments require Temple worship. So today, because Jews aren’t allowed to pray on the Temple Mount (restricted by both Muslims at the Dome and some orthodox rabbis) they can’t practice their religion as God has directed.
