What signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism that can be resolved by anti thyroid drug?
Almost all of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism can be corrected with anti-thyroid medications. Most people with hyperthyroidisim are treated with radioactive iodine and not with long term anti-thyroid medications. Anti-thyroid medications (e.g. Propylthiouracil) are usually used temporarily until more definitive therapy (e.g. radioactive iodine) can be performed. Radioactive iodine and anti-thyroid medications do reverse most of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Grave’s disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism and is associated with bulging of the eyes (exophthalmos.) The eye abnormalities associated with Grave’s disease do not change with the anti-thyroid medications and can potentially worsen with radioactive iodine therapy.
