Why the bias against auto trader? It's a great resource; online or catalogs. Do you already know what you want? If there is a large, local used car lot that predominantly carries the makes you're looking for, you'll be able to get a good idea of what cars are available in your price range just by walking the lot and talking to a salesman. (You might even have a car come to mind that you hadn't considered that might actually be the best fit for you. This happened to me.) But, anyway, just shoot the breeze with him--no commitments at first. He will be a font of info and should be able to direct you into a few cars to test drive and you can easily go from there. Then, go to cars.com and even kbb.com has some. The local papers often have the latest deals in the Sunday paper. Never buy the first time you step foot on the lot. They're always more flexible the more you talk to them. Oh, yeah, and eBay is not a good option unless you find a LOCAL car.
