The only thing I don’t like about the 2012 Ford Focus is that it’s still a year away from arriving in dealerships. In the sedan and the five-door, you can finally see that Ford’s kinetic design captured lightning in a bottle. On paper, the design is supposed to convey motion. But in person, it says “smoking hot.” The multifaceted sides with strong character lines give the Focus a distinctive and modern appeal. The elongated headlights — that stretch up to the hood and cut into the fenders — say high tech and elegant. It’s friendly but aggressive. It might coddle you or smack you in the mouth. Or both. Ford will give the Focus an all-new 2-liter direct injection four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission that should push its highway mileage close to 40 miles per gallon (final figures are not available). There is even electric-power steering, which Ford uses to lighten engine load and dial in precise steering. For engine geeks and mechanics (everyone else can nod their heads knowingly), the new inline four uses two camshafts, one for the intake valves and the other for the exhaust. It goes a step further and uses a solenoid to move each shaft to retard or advance the intake or exhaust valves and provide better timing.
