What sort of “respect” is being sought?
Respect for the idea that one’s personal religious views should be free to deny others’ civil equality. Oh, and respect for these religious folks’ right to disrespect LGBT people. Why is the quip phrased the way it is? Because it helps the speaker sleep better at night. After all, if he admitted to himself the truth, which is that his cruel and discriminatory endeavor has absolutely gutted millions of gay people, and if he acknowledged that this campaign embraced the sort of bias that is worthy of the strongest form of disrespect words can possibly muster, he would have a tougher time congratulating himself on this “win.” Now that we’ve said all that, go read Ron Prentice’s official statement regarding the “yes on 8” “victory”: This is a great day for marriage.
