What started the concept of restaurant stoves in the home kitchen?
Approximately 20 years ago, while working in the restaurant equipment business outfitting and designing commercial kitchens, I identified an historic moment. I give credit for the whole idea of putting a commercial stove in the home to a set designer in Hollywood working on the TV sitcom “Family Ties”, starring Michael J. Fox. If you remember, the kitchen set contained a large stainless steel commercial stove. Actually, it was a 60″ wide double oven range with a raised griddle broiler, made by the US Range CoTM. This was America’s first chance to even think about the idea of a restaurant stove in the home. Knowing a person that worked for US Range, I can tell you that they were flooded with calls about the TV show’s stove. Because of this instant national exposure, my business along with all restaurant supply companies started selling many commercial ranges into homes.
