California, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Washington are the current member states of the Mega Millions lottery. California was the last state to join this group, having joined in 2005. The actual drawing is held twice a week, tuesday and friday, at 11pm eastern time, at WSB-TV in Atlanta, Georgia. Mega Millions jackpots start at 12 million dollars and increase with each concescutive drawing until there is a jackpot winner. The jackpot has gone as high as 363 million dollars. Lottery tickets cost one dollar per play; a play consists of a line of 5 numbers from 1 to 56 and a 6th number from 1 to 46; it is possible for the 6th number to be the same as one of the first 5. Players may pick their numbers or have them drawn at random. The jackpot is won by matching all six numbers on one line to the drawn numbers for that evening. There are lesser prizes: 250,000 dollars for matching the first 5 numbers down to 2 dollars
