What strategies and techniques should a 1L employ to succeed academically?

I write from the perspective of a law student educated in the British model of legal education, where the law degree is an 4-year undergraduate degree and not a 3-year graduate degree as would be the case in the US. However, I do believe that there are strategies and techniques that generally apply to anyone who is in year one in any law school and wants to succeed academically. So here goes: CLASS Treat classes as you would work. This means being professional, and working very, very hard. There is no magic in getting good grades, only careful planning, absolute discipline and pure hard work (and you need to put in even more work if you are not naturally gifted; I had to work extra hard to make up for my limited intellectual capacity). A normal job has set working hours. Law school on the other hand is a 24/7 commitment, and if you have to study till late at night, so be it. It should be treated as part of the job.
