This is a very broad question so I’ll list a few of the ways: Some mammals and birds will change their fur/feathers to a much better insulating winter layer. They shed off the old layer to do this. Other animals will hibernate or go into torpor states where they let their body temperature drop very low and they just sleep through the winter. Some animals (typically birds) will migrate to warmer areas. Aquatic animals can be weird. Some frogs can completely freeze up without damaging their organs. They have to release chemicals similar to car antifreeze to be able to do this though. Other aquatic animals will hide in the mud on the bottom of lakes. Water is most dense at 4 degrees C so all that water sinks to the bottom. The surface of a lake may be frozen but the water underneath isn’t. Lots of trees will lose their leaves because during winter they can’t keep their internal water from freezing so they won’t be able to produce any energy.
